Baby Safety – Around Open Water

Water safety for your baby. Boy this summer has been very hot just about everywhere!

To cool both you and the baby, you may be going to the beach, lake, river or somewhere where water is involved.

I live by the ocean and unfortunately some children have drowned because mom, dad or whoever was taking care of the child did not take proper precautions.

Please click on the link below for some great tips on water safety for your child

Baby Sling

Babies have died from being carried in a sling. Bottom line, if your baby is under four months old, DO NOT carry your baby in a sling.

Your baby craves a lot of attention from you. There is a way that you can have your baby with you all day long and hands free.

You can cook, shop, clean the house, and cook while your baby is snuggled up against you.

There are several carriers on the market that allow you to do this. Some have been recalled. But there are lots of ways that you can wear your baby.

One of my favorites is the sling. But as I mentioned above, if under four months old, DO NOT use this.

Here is a short list of the benefits to your baby and yourself. Be aware that your back has to be in good shape! If you have back problems like I do, you better pass on this.

1.  Your baby could cry up to 50% less than most babies.

2. Your baby will be less bored.

3. Wearing your baby will stimulate her/his brain!

If your baby is ready to have a crib or you have one already, check out this safety tip.

Make sure that the crib slates are not more than 2 3/8″ apart. The mattress should fit snugly. See if there is a certification safety seal.

Following this precautions can keep your baby from strangulation. Also suffocation has occured when the mattress does not fit snugly.

Please check out product recalls for the particular crib you have or are planning to buy.

Monthly product recalls (partial list) is located on the right had side of this blog.

Babies can get burns very easily. If you have ever burnt your hand or any place  on your body you know how painful it can be. It can also be devastating.  Here is a short list to help you protect your baby.

  • Keep electrical cords out of reach – you know how curious babies are.
  • Keep hot food and liquids away from the edge of tables and counters.
  • Keep the temperature of the water heater at 120 degrees max.
  • Please do not hold your baby while you are cooking, nor have your baby in a sling.
  • Please do not smoke anywhere near your baby.
